Crystal Asige is a nominated senator representing people with disabilities and special interest groups in the Senate. She is also a renowned advocate and an award-winning musician.
Diagnosed with glaucoma as a teenager, Asige has been at the forefront of championing inclusivity and promoting equitable rights for people living with disability in the country.
In April this year, her Persons with Disability Bill Number 7 of 2023 was approved by legislators, marking a win for differently abled Kenyans. The new Act replaced the outdated 2003 law and aligns more with the 2010 Constitution.
The Act creates a tax relief for employers who hire persons with disabilities or make accommodations for them. It also restructured the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, giving it clearer powers to protect and monitor rights.
It was widely regarded as a landmark law in Kenya, as it not only defends the rights of people living with disability but also sets up real institutional and enforcement mechanisms.
Earlier this year, she also publicly condemned medical facilities that continue charging persons with disabilities assessment fees, which she said go against the PWD Act, 2025.
Besides championing the rights of People with Disability, Asige is also an honouree and a Kenyan Top 40 Under 40 winner.
She has also been named to the TIME100 Next 2024
